Meeting No. 7

Thursday, November 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Yvan Bernier, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Bill Gilmour, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano.

Acting Member(s) present: Reg Bélair for Lou Sekora; David Pratt for Lawrence O'Brien; Rick Limoges for Paul Steckle.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Paliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer

Witness(es): From the Sockeye Crisis Committee: Dan Edwards; John Sutcliffe; Christine Hunt; John Henderson. From the British Columbia Fisheries Survival Coalition: Bruce Probert. As an individual: The Honorable Dennis Streifel, B.C. Minister of Fisheries.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of the West Coast Fisheries.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

Peter Stoffer moved, - That the motion adopted by the Committee regarding questioning of witnesses on October 20, 1999 be recinded and the following substituted therefor:

- That witnesses be given ten (10) minutes for their opening statement and, that during the questioning of witnesses, there be allocated ten (10) minutes for the first questioner beginning with the Official Opposition, followed by the Bloc québécois and the Liberal Party, and that thereafter five (5) minutes be allocated to the New Democratic Party, the Progressive Conservative Party, and if there is a subsequent round, that the rotation be the same except all questioning will be for five (5) minutes.

After debate, the question being put to motion, it was negatived.

At 11:15 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
