STANDING COMMITTEE ON FINANCE

COMITÉ PERMANENT DES FINANCES

EVIDENCE

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

Monday, October 1, 2001

• 1530

[English]

The Clerk of the Committee: Hon. members, I see a quorum.

[Translation]

Pursuant to Standing Orders 106(1) and 106(2),

[English]

your first item of business is to elect a chair. I am therefore ready to receive motions to that effect.

Mr. Ken Epp (Elk Island, Canadian Alliance): I would like to say that, over the past number of years in this committee, we have enjoyed the very excellent leadership of Maurizio Bevilacqua. I think it's probably true that people on both sides of this table have a high degree of respect for him, and I would be pleased to nominate him for that position.

The Clerk: It has been moved by Ken Epp that Maurizio Bevilacqua be elected chair of this committee. Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?

Some hon. members: Agreed.

The Clerk: It's agreed.

Congratulations, Mr. Bevilacqua.

Some hon. members: Hear, hear!

The Chair (Mr. Maurizio Bevilacqua (Vaughan—King—Aurora, Lib.)): We will now move to the election of vice-chairs.

Mr. McCallum.

Mr. John McCallum (Markham, Lib.): Since I've been on this committee, we've enjoyed the interesting anecdotes from Mr. Epp, so I'll nominate him as vice-chair.

Mr. Ken Epp: Does that mean I have to keep telling stories?

Mr. Charles Hubbard (Miramichi, Lib.): Mr. Chair, I nominate Nic Discepola, who has worked on the committee before.

The Chair: Nic Discepola.

First of all, congratulations to Mr. Epp, as vice-chair.

Mr. Ken Epp: I will work hard.

The Chair: All in favour of Mr. Discepola? No?

Congratulations, Mr. Discepola.

Well, that constitutes the order of the day. I want to thank you very much.

It's going to be a very busy fall for us. Traditionally, the finance committee has engaged in pre-budget consultation, and we've already started this in the past couple of weeks. We're also looking at the national security package that is going to be part and parcel of the pre-budget consultation, Of course, there's also the economic and fiscal update. We're also going to be looking at that, so it's going to be a busy agenda.

As in the past, of course, I thank you very much for the support you have given me. Let's work together to bring about positive change to people's lives here in Canada.

Thank you very much.

There is a meeting tomorrow at 9.30, in room 253-D, on pre-budget consultation.

The meeting is adjourned.
