HOUSE INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITTEE UNDERTAKES A PRE-STUDY OF BILL C-4, AN ACT TO IMPLEMENT THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN CANADA, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE UNITED MEXICAN STATES

Ottawa, 5 février 2020 -

On 3 February 2020, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade adopted a motion to begin a pre-study of Bill C-4, An Act to implement the Agreement between Canada, the United States of America and the United Mexican States.

“As the committee members begin this study, it is important that we hear from Canadian businesses and the citizens of their communities from coast to coast to coast on how the new NAFTA agreement will affect them in a positive way. Canada is a trading nation and determining how trade arrangements can affect that trade is of critical interest to us as a committee and as a country," said Hon. Judy A. Sgro, Chair of the committee.

The committee will invite Government of Canada officials and representatives from various sectors to appear as witnesses. At present, the committee intends to hear witnesses on the following dates, which are subject to change:

• Wednesday, February 5 from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

• Tuesday, February 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

• Wednesday, February 19 from 3:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

• Thursday, February 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:45 p.m.

The committee is also interested in receiving written briefs from Canadians providing their views about Bill C-4, the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement and the ways in which this agreement would affect them. Briefs should not exceed 2,000 words in length and should be submitted as soon as possible to the clerk of the House of Commons Standing committee on International Trade using the website button to do so.
