NEWS RELEASE

Closure of the Comox MCTS Station of the Canadian Coast Guard

Ottawa, May 6, 2016 -

After conducting public hearings in March and April 2016, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans tabled its report in the House of Commons today entitled: A Report on the Closure of the Comox Marine Communications and Traffic Services Centre. The overarching objective of the Committee’s recommendations is that the planned closure of the Comox Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) centre must proceed with caution to ensure the safety of mariners and the environment.

In light of conflicting opinions expressed by different witnesses, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans made a number of recommendations. Committee members believe that these recommendations will enhance the monitoring and reporting of the performance and sustainability of the MCTS system across Canada. The House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans also requested a risk assessment of the MCTS consolidation project in the Western Region to be completed on an annual basis.
