Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, the Committee resumed its study of the system of shelters and transition houses serving women and children affected by violence against women and intimate partner violence.

Eva Kratochvil, Anita Olsen Harper and Dawn Clark, by videoconference from Nanaimo, British Columbia, made statements and answered questions.

Sheila Malcolmson gave notice of the following motion:

That, notwithstanding the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, in relation to the study of the system of shelters and transition houses serving women and children affected by violence against women and intimate partner violence, the Committee extend the duration of its study to include Indigenous women’s organizations, shelters, transition houses and Indigenous women themselves due to the lack of Indigenous voices during the study.

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 4:36 p.m., Pam Damoff took the Chair.

Yvan Clermont made a statement and, with Kathy AuCoin, answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

Sheila Malcolmson gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee invite the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada to appear no later than December 2018 to brief the Committee on the government’s efforts to immediately end the practice of forced and coerced sterilization of Indigenous women, pursuant to the Minister’s mandate for a ‘’renewed, nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous Peoples, based on recognition of rights, respect, cooperation, and partnership’’ and the government’s commitment to Article 7(2) of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; and that the meeting be televised and no less than one hour in length.
