The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met in a televised session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Fast, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joe Comartin, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Ed Fast, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, Marc Lemay, Réal Ménard, Rob Moore, Rick Norlock, Daniel Petit, Brent Rathgeber and Brian Storseth.

 

Acting Members present: Derek Lee for Brian Murphy.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Isabelle Duford, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: Robin MacKay, Analyst; Dominique Valiquet, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice.

 

Witnesses: Department of Justice: John H. Sims, Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General's Office. Public Prosecution Service of Canada: Brian J. Saunders, Director of Public Prosecutions, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Committee commenced consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2008-2009: Votes 1c, 5c, 20c, 30c and 35c under JUSTICE referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:27 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 1c, 5c, 20c, 30c and 35c under JUSTICE.

 

Votes 1c, 5c, 20c, 30c and 35c under JUSTICE carried on division.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair report Votes 1c, 5c, 20c, 30c and 35c under JUSTICE to the House.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Réal Ménard, — It is moved that, in its study on the state of organized crime in Canada, the Justice Committee travel to British Columbia to hear testimony from the Solicitor General, Mr. John Van Dongen, and any other relevant witnesses.

The debate continued.

 

It was agreed, — That the motion be amended as follows:

That for its study on the state of organized crime in Canada, the Justice Committee travel to Vancouver and other cities to be determined to hear testimony from the Solicitor General, Mr. John Van Dongen, and any other relevant witnesses, and that the Committee begin its hearings in Vancouver.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 

At 4:57 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:58 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.
