FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE CALLS FOR 0.7% AID TIMELINE AND LEGISLATION

Ottawa, June 13, 2005 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade today tabled an all-party report calling on the Government of Canada to commit to a concrete budgetary timeline for reaching the international development assistance target of 0.7% of GNP by 2015. The Committee also called for legislation to make poverty reduction the priority of Canadian aid.

"We have heard a lot of compelling testimony supporting these goals and we agree it is time to act so that Canada can take a leadership position among the G8 countries," said Committee Chair Dr. Bernard Patry.

The Committee has begun its study of the Government's International Policy Statement released in April and plans further public consultations on all aspects of it before the end of the year.
