MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 6

Monday, December 2, 2002

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met in camera at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Vice-Chair, John McKay, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Chuck Cadman, Derek Lee, Paul Harold Macklin, John Maloney, Richard Marceau, John McKay, Lynn Myers, Kevin Sorenson, Vic Toews.

Acting Member present: Paul Szabo for Hedy Fry.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, senior analyst.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on marriage and the legal recognition of same-sex unions.

The Committee considered a draft budget.

It was agreed, -- That the proposed operational budget of the Committee in the amount of $62,500.00 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the budget Sub-committee of the Liaison Committee.

 

It was agreed -- That eleven (11) members of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be authorized to travel to Vancouver, Edmonton, Moose Jaw (Sask) and Steinbach (Man.) from January 26-31, 2003, to Iqaluit, Toronto, Sudbury from February 9-13, 2003 and to Halifax, Sussex (N.B./N.-B.), Rimouski and Montréal from February 16-21, 2003, in order to hold public hearings in relation to its study on Marriage and the Legal Recognition of Same-sex Unions and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

It was agreed -- That, in relation to its study on Marriage and the Legal Recognition of Same-sex Unions, eight (8) members of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be authorized to travel to France, Belgium and Holland from March 1-8, 2003 for meetings with European officials and that the necessary staff do accompany the Committee.

It was agreed, -- That the proposed travel budgets for the Committee’s study on marriage and the legal recognition of same-sex unions be adopted and that the Chair present the said budgets to the Budget Sub-committee of the Liaison Committee.

At 5:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
