Tuesday, January 28, 2003

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, The Hon. Andy Scott, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Chuck Cadman, The Hon. Hedy Fry, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, Richard Marceau, John McKay, The Hon. Andy Scott, Kevin Sorenson, Vic Toews.

Acting Members present: Marlene Jennings for Irwin Cotler, Larry McCormick for Paul Harold Macklin, Réal Ménard for Pierrette Venne.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, principal analyst, Kristen Douglas, analyst.

Witnesses: From Statistics Canada: Doug Norris, Director General, Census and Demographic Statistics; Pierre Turcotte, Chief, Families, Households and Housing.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on marriage and the legal recognition of same-sex unions.

The witnesses made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:18 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:25 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee considered matters related to its future business.

At 10:57 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
