Thank you, Chair, and thank you, Ms. Kelly, for your time here and your presentation. Certainly we all appreciate that.
We know that you are the director of the women in war program at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and that you've spent almost five years in the DRC and in speaking about combatants and non-state armed groups and conflict-related sexual violence.
In a recent blog posting you reflected on the complex process of trying to understand one of the most incomprehensible human behaviours. Could you discuss some of your experiences and give your reflections on spending some five years in the Democratic Republic of Congo?

Ms. Kelly, in a recent report you wrote, “Characterizing Sexual Violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo”, you stated that one in three women reported being rejected by their husbands, and one in 15 report being rejected by their communities after rape. You continue to say that the stigma they face as survivors of sexual violence can be as traumatic as the attack itself. Can you explain how sexual violence is detrimental to human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in addition to the emotional effects of sexual violence?

Thank you, Mr. Bergeron, for your time and your presentation. It's certainly a pleasure to see you here again, especially coming from my province of British Columbia. A warm welcome to you.
Mining can lead to economic expansion, a decrease in poverty within third world countries, and some economic advantages, including improved services, increased employment in the local communities, and raised demand for goods and services that make the economy of local communities thrive.
Goldcorp has previously stated that the company seeks to have a positive economic impact wherever it operates. How does Goldcorp have a positive economic impact in Honduras?

On the Goldcorp website, it talks about how the company continues to support the local community there with a range of social programs at the San Martin mine in Honduras. In addition, it says you offer such benefits as road maintenance, dust suppression systems, water supply and sewage systems, providing teachers for elementary schools, maintenance, and educational facilities.
Can you talk about the ways in which Goldcorp supports the Honduras community?

Thank you, Mr. Dubowitz and Mr. Levitt.
Mr. Levitt, your colleague, Mehdi Khalaji from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy mentioned a while ago in an article that since the protest that followed the 2009 election, Iran's human rights abuses have worsened day by day. Considering your expertise as a director and a senior fellow for the Washington Institute's Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, what are some specific examples of human rights abuses that have worsened day by day? What can be done to improve the human rights situation in Iran?

The Iranian legal system allows numerous human rights violations, including discrimination against women and ethno/sectarian minorities and the imposition of brutal sentences such as stoning.
Could the witnesses offer their opinions on what specifically can be done to improve these legalities to end these brutal sentences?

Thank you, Chair, and thank you, Ms. Tamás and Professor Akhavan, for your time and your presentations. Certainly all of us do appreciate them.
Professor Akhavan, you are one of the founders of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, and your leadership in the Iranian civil society movement has been featured in The New York Times and Maclean's, and in the award-winning documentary film The Green Wave.
So from all your experiences, Professor Akhavan, what do you believe are the best ways to address the human rights situation in Iran?

Thank you, Mr. Chair. I'll be sharing my time with Mr. Harris.
While we commend Loblaw for compensating the victims, Mr. Chant, in a recent CTV story regarding Loblaw's decision to sign the fire and building safety code in Bangladesh, your company made a statement that the accord aligns with and addresses the company's commitment to a new standard that all of its control brand products must be made in facilities that respect local construction and building codes.
Please explain Loblaw's commitment to construction in light of what occurred in Bangladesh and how your company plans on sticking to this new agreement.

Thank you, Chair.
My question goes to Mr. Bradet.
Mr. Bradet, in the last nine years you have led more than twenty missions to more than twenty African countries and have helped to organize a number of major conferences in Canada on economic development. It seems that international development is something you feel very passionate about, and the importance of combining international development and foreign affairs.
Recently the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has decided to focus its engagement in Africa on the new economies that are rapidly expanding. Do you think merging CIDA with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade will help to accomplish these goals?

Many people feel that the issue of development is combined and taken into consideration while examining foreign policies, and a positive effect will be seen on foreign countries since development is essential to helping many foreign countries that Canada interacts with.
In light of your experiences as the president and CEO of the Canadian Council on Africa and your vast experiences visiting several different African nations, please comment on the potential benefits of the integration of CIDA and the Department Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

Mr. Gordon, The Economist magazine ranks Honduras as the 85th most democratic country in the world, with a precipitous decline over the last few years. Nearby countries haven't seen such a sharp change for the worse. What is present in Honduras but not in its neighbours that is contributing to these problems?
Can you please say something on that?
