Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my hon. colleague for his advocacy as a member of the heritage committee and also as an artist himself for many years.
The member is absolutely right. There is this idea that the only people concerned with free speech in the country are the Conservatives. Artists have for decades, if not centuries, defended freedom of speech. The idea that they would all of a sudden forget about this just because they are in favour of Bill C-10 makes absolutely no sense. There are a number of safeguards in Bill C-10, and we have heard from Department of Justice, as well as in the body of the laws and regulations we have in Canada. The CRTC is not above the law.
Bill C-10 would not apply to individuals, and it says that very clearly in the bill right now.
Monsieur le Président, je voudrais remercier mon collègue de son travail au comité du patrimoine, et de sa défense des artistes, dont il fait lui-même partie depuis de nombreuses années.
Le député a tout à fait raison. Les conservateurs croient être les seuls à se soucier de la liberté d'expression au pays. Voilà des décennies, voire des siècles que les artistes défendent la liberté d'expression. La présomption qu'ils oublieraient soudainement tout cela parce qu'ils sont en faveur du projet de loi C‑10 n'a absolument aucun sens. Le projet de loi C‑10 contient des mesures de protection, ce que confirme le ministère de la Justice, de même que le libellé des lois et des règlements canadiens. Le CRTC n'est pas affranchi du respect des lois.
Le projet de loi C‑10 ne s'appliquerait pas au public, ce que le libellé indique très clairement.
