Mr. Speaker, we have some concerns around this trade agreement, especially when it comes to biologic medicines that are the most expensive and profitable class of medicines out there. For example, popular biologics to treat rheumatic arthritis and Crohn's disease can cost between $20,000 and $30,000 annually. The cost for certain biologics designed to treat rare diseases can be substantially higher. Biosimilars can significantly lower these costs, increasing access and stretching heath dollars further. Even insulin costs are going up.
Why does the government want Canadians suffering from these types of illnesses to have to pay more for their medications? That is what is going to happen if this trade agreement is ratified as it is.
Monsieur le Président, nous avons des objections concernant cet accord commercial, en particulier dans le domaine des médicaments biologiques, qui sont les plus coûteux et qui rapportent plus que toute autre classe de médicaments. Par exemple, les médicaments biologiques très employés qui servent à traiter la fièvre rhumatismale et la maladie de Crohn peuvent coûter de 20 000 $ à 30 000 $ par année. Certains médicaments biologiques destinés au traitement de maladies rares peuvent coûter encore beaucoup plus cher. Les médicaments biologiques biosimilaires peuvent coûter beaucoup moins cher et sont donc plus accessibles. Les sommes consacrées à la santé seront alors utilisées plus rationnellement. Même le coût de l'insuline augmente.
Pourquoi le gouvernement veut-il que les Canadiens qui souffrent de certaines maladies soient obligés de payer leurs médicaments plus cher? C'est ce qui va se produire si cet accord commercial est ratifié.
