Mr. Chair, this is déjà vu all over again. We've heard yet again the same economic arguments that the Conservatives have been making for years. They made them in the 2015 election, when we proposed to invest in Canadians and they talked about debt reduction and austerity. They lost that election. Then in 2019, after four years of our demonstrating that investing in Canadians could not only create over a million new jobs but lift over a million Canadians out of poverty, they continued to make those same tired arguments and were rejected once again by Canadians.
We have demonstrated that fiscal responsibility, managing our finances properly while investing in Canadians, has been the responsible thing to do and has left us the fiscal firepower to invest in Canadians during this pandemic.

Madam Chair, when can the people of Canada expect an economic update from the government?

Madam Chair, again, while it would be impossible to provide a clear economic projection at this time, we will continue to be open and transparent about the actions we are taking for Canadians.

Madam Chair, I was a finance executive for many years and I know that preparing budgets is complicated. Is the finance minister no longer producing economic updates? Is he saying that he can't figure out the numbers, or is the government leaving that to the PBO?
When will the government stop letting down Canadians and provide an economic update?

Madam Chair, honestly, we have been providing support for Canadians, workers and businesses throughout this crisis and we will continue to do so because we believe we are in a strong fiscal position. We will help these businesses to recover when it is time.

Thank you, Mr. Chair.
The Parliamentary Budget Officer expressed concern about the lack of a budget plan from the government.
Does the government plan to table an economic update or a budget by the end of June, yes or no?

Mr. Chair, I want to thank the member for his question.
Of course, we must be transparent with Canadians. We've explained all our measures and the approximate cost of the measures.
We'll continue to use the transparency approach. When the situation is more stable, we'll have the opportunity to better explain the future of our fiscal situation.

Mr. Chair, I hope that the time taken to choose the person who would answer me will be taken into account in the calculation of my speaking time.
I'll repeat my question for the minister. If he can't table a full budget, what's stopping him from providing an economic update?

Mr. Chair, as I said, we know that we must be transparent. That's why we provided the information to the committees, to Parliament and, of course, to Canadians.
We'll continue to use our approach, and when we have a somewhat more stable economic situation—

I'll ask a simple question. Will we have an economic update by the end of June, yes or no?

Mr. Chair, when the economic situation is more stable, we'll have more to say.

Thank you.
As demonstrated by your speech at the beginning of this committee meeting, for two months, the government has been piling on more and more announcements and new programs, not to mention changes to existing programs.
I think it would be appropriate to table an economic update by summertime. I'm envisioning a document that would provide a broad overview of the various programs that have been rolled out, outline the economic situation, and explain your department's working assumptions and the scenarios it's juggling. When the Parliamentary Budget Officer testified before the committee last Tuesday and was asked about this, he said this kind of update was urgently needed.
Are you planning to table an update in the next few weeks?

We believe transparency is very important. That's why you received a 30-page report today outlining our measures. We're making an effort to stay transparent. This crisis is obviously still in flux, and it's hard to make projections right now. We'll be able to do more once things stabilize.

Will there be an economic update or budget tabled before Canada Day, yes or no?

As I mentioned in French to Gabriel, we are providing significant information to this committee, and as the situation—
