Mr. Attaran, this is not a partisan issue. How can we plank the curve? Can we work together and see whether the vaccines are working and that type of thing? Can the CIHR do more for public research, for PPE? Can you give advice on that?

Thank you.

First of all, thank you to all the witnesses for being here. Dr. Mohammad, thank you for your leadership.
My first question is for Dr. Mohammad.
How can the government increase our support to the hospitals, the health care providers, to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19? As you know, we have Brampton Civic Hospital and all the health care professionals are doing an amazing job. I just want your views on that.

I also want to mention this, if you can answer.
As the member for Brampton South, I represent a highly diverse riding. As you know, many who immigrated to my riding and others are international medical graduates with health care training from international sources. Recently, the federal government has started a recruitment campaign to find those who have medical skills and want to help in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr. Naveed Mohammad, given the recruitment campaign, while credentials recognition is a provincial jurisdiction, how else could the federal government support programs like this, in a pan-Canadian effort to bridge those health care staffing gaps?
Mr. David Dingwall, you can elaborate on this too, please.

Thank you, Mr. Chair.
I also want to thank all front-line workers, including the witnesses who are here today, for everything they do.
My first question is for the Public Health Agency of Canada.
I want to ask you about the hospitals that are already running at overcapacity, that have been accommodating and treating all patients during COVID-19. How can they get access to the national emergency stockpile? Can you update us on procurement efforts for medical supplies in Canada?

It's for the Public Health Agency of Canada, yes.

Thank you.
I'm also concerned about the mental health of Canadians during this stressful and unprecedented time. Is the federal government taking any measures to support the mental health of Canadians?

Thank you.
I'm from Brampton. Yesterday I had a conversation with the chief medical officer of Peel region, Dr. Lawrence Loh. Today I was talking to the CAO of Peel region, Nancy Polsinelli. Last weekend we also heard about nine deaths in one seniors home last week in Ontario, which has since risen to 13 deaths in long-term care homes. Clearly this is a tragedy in the community. How are we addressing this issue of long-term care home outbreaks? Are there any extra precautions?

Thank you, Minister for your leadership.
Panel, you're doing an awesome job. I thank you very much for being here today.
Minister, my riding is Brampton South. It is known as a hot spot for diabetes, especially polyuria. Too many in my community are feeling the affects of diabetes. I have put forward a private member's bill to establish a national diabetes framework.
Can you tell us what the government is doing to decrease the number—which is rising each year—of Canadians with diabetes?

In your mandate letter, there is a commitment to lead work, with the support of the Deputy Prime Minister and with other ministers, to strengthen medicare and renew our health agreement with the provinces and territories.
I'm from Brampton. It has one hospital, Brampton Civic Hospital. It's chronically underfunded and faces overcrowding with hallway medical care on a daily basis. The City of Brampton declared a health emergency. What work are you doing with the Province of Ontario to ensure that the people of Brampton can access the services they need to stay healthy?

Canadians pay too much for prescription drugs. In the last Parliament, in the health committee, we conducted a study on national pharmacare. What are you doing to move us forward on national pharmacare, so that no Canadian has to make a choice between medication and paying their bills?
