Minister, thank you for coming.
In your short tenure as minister, and after the hearing today, I'm pretty impressed that we've been able to reduce irregular border crossings, I believe by 47% year over year, and this has been done without any special or separate legislation. In fact, it's been done by outreach, and efficient enforcement and processing by your department and the department under IRCC.
For me, obviously, British Columbia is an important constituency. Can you tell me how many irregular migrants have crossed over the Canada-U.S. border into B.C. in subsequent months...?

Yes.
Mr. Longfield earlier talked about a tragic situation with African swine fever. In British Columbia, as you know, we had a vibrant hog industry that is now non-existent. In B.C. there are no slaughterhouses for export. Given the geographical proximity of British Columbia to Asia—China, Korea, Japan—do you think there is a possibility of reviving a hog industry and perhaps an organic hog industry?

Thank you, Mr. Chair, and thank you to the ministers and staff for being here.
Minister, as you know I come from beautiful British Columbia. Canola counts for a large amount of field crops, country grains and oilseeds produced in British Columbia. I'm just wondering if there's an impact on British Columbia. If there is, what have you and your counterparts done to mitigate that effect so it would help British Columbians?

Mr. Chair, thank you.
Mr. Komal, thank you for your testimony.
Obviously, this is a serious issue. We've talked a little bit about how it occurred. Can we talk a little bit about how we can prevent it from happening again? As you know, we've had a program in place since the early 1920s, I believe. Should we be updating that program?

Minister, earlier on Monsieur Breton talked about the dairy farm investment program. Another individual you met a year ago or so, is from the Savage farm. They have a dairy farm in east Richmond and they were able to obtain funding under the dairy farm investment program to innovate, to go into organic products.
Can you talk a little about how this program has been used, particularly in B.C.?

Mr. Chair, I'm very tempted to delve into the process of aging whisky, only for health reasons, but I think I'll resist that temptation and move on to other issues.
I'd like to thank both Mr. Smith and Mr. Thiel for appearing here.
As Mr. MacGregor did, I'd like to go a bit parochial.
Mr. Smith, you talked about the national scope of the organization. I'm blessed to represent the folks in Steveston—Richmond East, which is just south of Vancouver, and you mentioned that you're in the process of developing a centre in B.C. but that you haven't gotten there yet. Can you elaborate a little bit on that and on how we can be helpful, if we can, in helping that along?

Mr. Smith, you talked about the deficit on value added in food production in British Columbia. As you know, the greatest manufacturer is the agribusiness sector. The very first study that this committee undertook after the election was to look at the Coast Guard operations on the west coast. Of concern to us was the closure of the MCTS station at Comox. We have since been getting regular updates as to the performance of the newly amalgamated operation centre in Sidney, and there does still seem to be a significant number of outages and some gaps, particularly in staffing. A lot of the issues we identified in the study don't appear to have been resolved.
I'm wondering how closely you have been able to follow that and whether or not we did make the right decision in closing Comox.

Professor Thevathasan, thank you for coming out. I want to follow up on Mr. Drouin's point. I'm intrigued by your land use system or your analytical model. I'm from B.C. Would you be able to apply your analysis to the system in B.C.?
