Allegations have been raised that Vietnam restricts and tortures peaceful protesters, as you showed to us in the pictures. Are there particular kinds of protesters that the government targets and is there a reason why the government would target particular protesters?

Thank you, Mr. Chair.
Thank you, Ms. Bose, for taking time out of your busy schedule to come and share your thoughts with us today.
I understand that in Bangladesh there have been over 100 deaths since January and the police there have arrested thousands of activists and banned the opposition groups from holding demonstrations. Is there a danger that this heavy crackdown on anti-government protestors in Bangladesh will create an opening for militant extremism to take root in the country?

This question goes to both of you. Anyone can answer. As previous witnesses to this committee have mentioned, the North Korean regime uses food as a weapon. What end is massive famine supposed to serve for the regime? Also, how does North Korea have the capacity or the means to feed the general population?

Thank you, Chair.
Thank you, Mr. Dubowitz and Mr. Levitt.
Mr. Levitt, your colleague, Mehdi Khalaji from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy mentioned a while ago in an article that since the protest that followed the 2009 election, Iran's human rights abuses have worsened day by day. Considering your expertise as a director and a senior fellow for the Washington Institute's Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, what are some specific examples of human rights abuses that have worsened day by day? What can be done to improve the human rights situation in Iran?

The Iranian legal system allows numerous human rights violations, including discrimination against women and ethno/sectarian minorities and the imposition of brutal sentences such as stoning.
Could the witnesses offer their opinions on what specifically can be done to improve these legalities to end these brutal sentences?

Human Rights Watch has described Eritrea as one of the most repressive countries or regimes in the world, and it has garnered relatively little popular notice. Given the success of past rights awareness campaigns, what's stopping the situation in Eritrea from being high profile? What can be done to raise a little bit more awareness in the world?

Authoritarian and totalitarian regimes go to great lengths to repress dissent in every form. So Eritrea has no free press and restricts assembly. But are there any kind of significant dissident groups who speak against the regime? Are there groups of Eritreans who work for reform?

It is estimated that about 90% of Malians are Muslims, mostly Sunni or Sufi, and approximately 5% to 8% are Christian. If the French are unsuccessful in beating down al Qaeda linked terrorists, what will this mean for the Christian population living in Mali?

Thank you, Chair.
Thank you, Mr. Colmenares.
We are honoured to have you here as a representative of the Bayan Muna party in the Philippines.
Your party seeks to raise the quality of life for all Filipinos by establishing a very meaningful representative government as well as by fighting corruption in government. It is extremely disheartening, however, to hear that your party and its members have been targets of numerous violent attacks, including murder and arbitrary arrests.
As you know, the next elections in the Philippines are due to take place in 2013. How do you think your party will be affected in these elections? Regarding those who might otherwise have voted for you, how have the violent actions taken against your party had an impact through fear of personal attack? How has this affected those who are thinking about running as possible candidates in the coming elections? On a more personal level, what has been your experience working within a government that appears largely hostile to your party?
Please comment on that.

Thank you, Chair.
Thank you both very much for your presentations.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seems to be an essential part of the Iranian state, responsible for protecting Iran from outside threats as well as playing a key role in silencing dissent against the regime. Some countries, notably the United States, describe the IRGC as a terrorist organization. Canada, while tending to be fairly close to the United States in the recognition of terrorist organizations, does not.
Given the IRGC's relationship with and importance to the Iranian state, what do you think the effects of extending terrorist organization recognition to the IRGC would be to the Iranian civil and military officials?
Any one of you can answer this question.

Could you please tell us how have the investigations into the attacks been handled? Also, as of now, what is the status of the 28 individuals who were arrested due to the clashes?
What are some of the accusations that the Egyptian state television station has made in an attempt to support their claims that the Copts had violently attacked the army and public property? How has the Egyptian community in general reacted to the accusations?
In the end, what can Canada and the international community do regarding this?
