Thank you.
I also heard the minister make a formal commitment to keeping an eye on the situation and to ensuring that outcomes will be achieved. For our part, my colleagues and I will make sure to ask the right questions and to check whether the work is being done. That is a priority for us. The Valcartier military base is in my riding. So this is a huge concern for me.
Let's come back to the topic at hand. I just mentioned the Valcartier base. As was said a little earlier, 220 military members from the Valcartier military base—mainly parachutists—will be in Poland as part of Operation Reassurance from June 28 to July 15. For the first time, in Poland, a rotation will last six months instead of three. Could you explain to us why the rotation will be longer in that specific case?

I know there is currently no plan to send to Ukraine soldiers who will be deployed on that rotation. They will be in Poland and may have to travel to other Eastern European countries. I know that Ukraine is currently not in the plans. Can that change as part of the mission?

Thank you Mr. Chairman.
First of all I would like to thank our witnesses for having come here to speak to us today.
This issue of transition to civilian life is very interesting. The Valcartier military base is located quite near where I live. I went to this base to meet with people a few times. Several times they mentioned the clear lack of resources for the military. What's more when they're released from service and they return to this military base to the places they know, it often happens that they cannot be relocated because they've become veterans and resources are hard to come by. This is what I was told by people on the military base. Also, as reported on the television show Enquête, there is a deplorable lack of human resources on military bases.
I would like to hear your comments about the lack of collaboration and coordination between the transition services programs offered by the Department of National Defence and Veterans Affairs Canada.

More specifically, we are already short of health care specialists for the military just as there are also shortages in the health care system for the Canadian public. It is therefore certain and understandable that we are also short of such personnel on military bases, but it's also obvious that there are repercussions for veterans. If resources are further cut back, how will you be able to guarantee these services for our veterans?

Thank you, Mr. Chair.
My thanks to the witnesses for appearing today.
I heard a term in English, but unfortunately I did not get the French translation. Rear-Admiral, I think you used the term ”casualties“: 2,000 casualties.
Is that dead and injured or just injured?

So it does not include those who have been killed.

My question was about the figures from Afghanistan. You mentioned 2,000 casualties. Does that mean 2,000 injured, or does it include the fallen?

Fine. I just wanted to make sure about that.
I would like to continue along the same lines as RAdm Smith. He touched on the question of keeping up medical skills. I am sure that the skills needed to treat those wounded in action are different from normal medical skills.
Could you tell me whether the physicians and nurses deployed in Afghanistan will get programs that will allow them work in war zones once again and will maintain or improve those specific skills? Or are they going to come back to Canada and do completely different work?

Fine. Could we also talk about improvements to personal protective equipment, or PPE? Could you tell me about any specific recent cases where technological improvements have provided soldiers with additional protection?
