Mr. Speaker, we are here to show leadership for Canadians, not jurisdictions. We are here to show leadership for our constituents. I think we can all agree that many constituents are struggling because they cannot afford their drug costs. This is the way we can act going forward.
I am sure that a lot of the messages we are hearing today are reminiscent of the kind of opposition that Tommy Douglas and others faced in bringing in medicare. They stood up for Canadians in their time in the face of great opposition, and often that opposition was from monied interests that wanted to profit off sick people.
Let us learn from that moment in time and have the courage to stand up and fully realize the idea of medicare for all by bringing in national universal pharmacare and really defending constituents, the people who send us here, the people who share the heartbreaking stories of what they are facing.
We have that opportunity at this moment in time, right now. Let us be on the right side of history.
Monsieur le Président, nous sommes ici pour faire preuve de leadership pour les Canadiens, et non pour les différentes administrations. Nous sommes ici pour faire preuve de leadership pour nos concitoyens. À mon avis, nous pouvons tous convenir que bon nombre de nos concitoyens en arrachent parce qu'ils ne peuvent tout simplement pas payer leurs médicaments. C'est ce que nous pouvons faire pour leur venir en aide.
Je suis persuadée que bien des arguments présentés aujourd'hui ressemblent à l'opposition à laquelle Tommy Douglas et ses collègues ont dû faire face dans le dossier de l'assurance-maladie. À l'époque, ils ont défendu les intérêts des Canadiens malgré une grande opposition, qui, bien souvent, provenait de groupes d'intérêts qui souhaitaient faire des profits au détriment des personnes malades.
Tirons des leçons de cette époque, ayons le courage de nos convictions et concrétisons pleinement l'idée d'une assurance-maladie pour tous en instaurant un régime universel et national d'assurance-médicaments et en défendant réellement nos concitoyens, les gens qui nous ont envoyés ici et qui nous font part des expériences déchirantes qu'ils vivent.
Cette possibilité nous est offerte à cet instant même. Rangeons-nous du bon côté de l'histoire.
