Petition to the Government of Canada

Whereas:
  • Canadian taxpayers fund the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) through Federal and Provincial budgets, as the Government reimburses 75-90% of CMPA Membership fee's for Physicians;
  • The lack of Government regulation and accountability over the CMPA funding creates an imbalance in the healthcare system, leaving families unsupported and taxpayers unaware of how their contributions are spent;
  • CMPA employs aggressive legal tactics to defend physicians, often prolonging litigation and disadvantaging families of injured patients seeking justice;
  • The fees for the CMPA membership increased by 128% in 2024, with up to 100% of these increases borne by taxpayers, further straining public resources;
  • Families impacted by birth injuries and other medical errors face overwhelming financial and emotional burdens without adequate systemic support;
  • More money is spent defending Medical errors than preventing them.
We, the undersigned, Citizens of Canada,, call upon the Government of Canada to 1. Conduct a thorough review of federal and provincial funding agreements to ensure that taxpayer dollars, which reimburse up to 90% of doctors CMPA membership fees, are tied to greater CMPA accountability and transparency in protecting patients rights;
2. Link federal funding provided to provinces for CMPA contributions to mandatory reforms ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and fairness in Medical Malpractice cases.
