Petition to the Government of Canada
- Canadians enjoy “the right to life, liberty, and the security of the person”;
- Since 1988, Canadian woman have also enjoyed the “legal” right to protect their own security and determine their own future in relation to the carriage of a fetus to term (the “Right to Choose”), with abortions having long been: funded by our universal health care system; and provided on request and on a confidential basis for all ages;
- In 2022, notwithstanding fifty years of precedent and constitutional protection for “life and liberty”, the Right to Choose was overturned in the United States by the Supreme Court, resulting in a wave of harmful restrictions on the Right to Choose being imposed by state courts and legislatures;
- The Leader of the Official Opposition has confirmed his willingness to allow Members of Parliament to introduce legislation to restrict the Right to Choose; and
- Canadians are not prepared to permit the Right to Choose to be made subject to, or restricted by, by any Canadian legislature or by the prerogative, discretion and/or ideological bias of any politically-appointed Canadian judge.
