Petition to the Government of Canada
- The Liberal government’s Dec 16, 2021 mandate letters to the Minister of Health and to the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth instructed them to: “…ensure that all Canadians have access to the sexual and reproductive health services they need, no matter where they live, by reinforcing compliance under the Canada Health Act…”;
- Current federal compliance measures for the Canada Health Act in relation to abortion are insufficient, since withholding funds from provinces in contravention has failed to result in full funding for abortion care;
- The government’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund was established in 2021 with an initial 3-year investment of $45 million for community projects to improve access to sexual and reproductive health care for people in Canada who face the greatest barriers to access, with an additional 3-year investment of $36 million provided in 2023;
- Sexual and reproductive health care is medically required under the Canada Health Act and critical to the well-being of all Canadians, who need sexual and reproductive health care over their entire lives and not just for three years; and
- The federal Conservative Party has made continual attempts to undermine abortion rights and access via private members' bills and motions, and a future federal Conservative government would pose a dire threat to sexual and reproductive health care funding and access.
