Petition to the Government of Canada

WHEREAS:

The abrupt departures of radio and television journalists and the loss of local programming have negatively affected residents in Kingston and surrounding areas; and

The disappearance of crucial local coverage must be a concern for all levels of government. It results in a poorly informed public, less able to politically and socially contribute to a vibrant, cohesive community.

We, the undersigned, residents of Kingston and the Islands, call upon the Government of Canada to take steps that will support local broadcasting, including by:

  • Extending the Canadian journalism labour tax credit to include radio and television;

  • Supporting Canadian-owned media by dedicating 70 per cent of the federal advertising dollars to local radio, TV, print, and digital media; and

  • Eliminating tax-deductions for advertising purchased on foreign-owned, internet-delivered media sites and services.
