EVIDENCE

Tuesday, February 24, 2026

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

[English]

     I'll turn the floor over to Mr. Savard-Tremblay.

[Translation]

    I will read the following motion, which was presented to the committee on December 4, 2025:
Whereas the Liberal government announced in its March 2023 budget, and reiterated in its 2024 budget, its intention to introduce before the end of the respective year a bill aimed at eliminating forced labour from Canadian supply chains and strengthening the prohibition on importing goods produced through forced labour;

Whereas this commitment was not renewed in the 2025 budget, and no government bill has been introduced to date;

That the committee report to the House to deplore the government’s current lack of legislative commitment to combating forced labour in supply chains and to urge the government to act; and

That the committee request a response from the government pursuant to section 109 of the rules of procedure.

[English]

    Thank you very much.
    Mr. Naqvi, go ahead please.
     Thank you very much, Chair.
    I appreciate Mr. Savard-Tremblay's tabling of the motion.
     I propose a slight amendment, which I've discussed. I hope it will be agreeable to all members. I've shared the English version with the clerk.
     After the paragraph with “Whereas this commitment was not renewed in the 2025 budget, and no government bill has been introduced to date”, we will take the remaining two paragraphs out and replace them with the following: “That the Committee report to the House to call on the Government to renew their commitment and table legislation to combat forced labour in supply chains, and that pursuant to Standing Order 109, the government table a comprehensive response.”
    Mr. Savard-Tremblay, are you in agreement?

[Translation]

    Yes, I agree to the proposed amendment.

[English]

    All in favour of the motion as amended?
    (Motion as amended agreed to)
    The Chair: Thank you very much.
    We will now go in camera.
    The meeting is suspended.
    [Proceedings continue in camera]
