The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in camera at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Rick Borotsik, Wayne Easter, Mark Eyking, Howard Hilstrom, David Kilgour, Larry McCormick, John O'Reilly, Louis Plamondon, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

Acting Members present: Murray Calder for Georges Farrah.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Steve Chaplin, Legal Counsel. Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Broiler Hatching Egg Marketing Agency: Ed De Jong, President. Chicken Farmers of Canada: Mike Dungate, General Manager; David Fuller, Chairman. Canadian Broiler Hatching Egg Marketing Agency: Errol Halkai, Executive Director. Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors Council: Robin Horel, President.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed on division, — That Lakeside Packers Ltd. (a division of Tyson Foods) of Brooks Alberta, Cargill Foods of High River, Alberta, and XL Beef of Calgary, Alberta and Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan having been invited to appear before the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food on Monday, February 23, 2004 and having failed to appear, this Committee send for these companies, persons, their relevant papers and records by summons and that the summons be for the first available hearing date to be determined by this Committee .

 

It was agreed, — That the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food be invited to appear before the Committee to discuss the BSE situation in Canada, the new Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) Program and the Main Estimates 2004-2005.

 

It was agreed, — That the Canadian Food Inspection Agency appear before the Committee to discuss several issues relevant to the Agency.

 

It was agreed, — That the Canadian Wheat Board appear before the Committee to discuss the pricing of wheat.

 

It was agreed, — That the Department of Fisheries and Oceans appear before the Committee to discuss fencing along waterways.

 

At 4:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Committee commenced its study of sanitary measures in the chicken industry.
 

David Fuller, Robin Horel and Ed De Jong made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
