The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Marlene Jennings, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Odina Desrochers, John Finlay, Mac Harb, Marlene Jennings, Philip Mayfield and Alex Shepherd.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O'Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Health: Robert Peterson, Director General, Therapeutics Products Directorate and A/Director General, Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch; Jean Peart, Senior Advisor, Quality Systems - Biologics and Genetic Therapies Directorate, Health Products and Food Branch. From the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission: Linda J. Keen, President and Chief Executive Officer; Mike Taylor, Executive Director, Office of Regulatory Affairs; Susan Clyne, Director, Human Resources Division. From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada; Crystal Pace, Principal, Audit Operations Branch; Ronnie Campbell, Principal, Audit Operations Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to consider Chapter 26, (Health Canada - Regulatory Regime of Biologics) of the December 2000 Report of the Auditor General of Canada; and Chapter 27, (Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission - Power Reactor Regulation) of the December 2000 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

Sheila Fraser from the Office of the Auditor General of Canada made a statement.

Robert Peterson from the Department of Health made a statement.

Linda J. Keen from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission made a statement.

Linda J. Keen, Mike Taylor, Susan Clyne, Robert Peterson and Jean Peart answered questions.

At 5:16 p.m., the Committee adjourned until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001.
