Government of Canada deficient in protecting personal information in the cloud

Ottawa, October 09, 2024 -

PARLIAMENT HILL – The Auditor General of Canada found in a 2022 performance audit that the Government of Canada failed to adequately protect personal information data, and must strengthen controls to prevent, detect and respond to threats on personal information stored electronically in the cloud. Key findings of the audit include:

• There were weaknesses in departments’ controls for preventing, detecting, and responding to cyberattacks.

• The roles and responsibilities for ensuring cloud cybersecurity were unclear and incomplete.

• The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat did not provide departments with a costing model or funding approach for cloud services.

A report of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, presented today in the House of Commons by Committee Chairman John Williamson, makes two recommendations to ensure that the Auditor General’s recommendations are adequately addressed and that the Government of Canada provide evidence of this to the Committee through progress reports.

Furthermore, a dissenting report was also tabled by a committee member from the Official Opposition.
