NEWS RELEASE

HOUSE OF COMMONS COMMITTEE INVITES THE PUBLIC TO SUBMIT WRITTEN BRIEFS FOR ITS REVIEW OF THE EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE PROGRAM

Ottawa, February 19, 2021 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities is undertaking a review of the Employment Insurance (EI) program. The study was inspired by a motion sponsored by Louise Chabot (Member of Parliament for Thérèse-De Blainville) and adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Over the course of the study, the Committee will explore various facets of the EI program’s ability to meet Canadians’ needs, including eligibility requirements, the adequacy of existing benefits, and EI modernization. It will also examine changes made to the program in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The committee previously studied the EI program during the 1st session of the 42nd Parliament, tabling its report (Exploring the Impact of Recent Changes to Employment Insurance and Ways to Improve Access to the Program) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, June 15, 2016.

The Committee invites members of the public to submit written briefs no longer than 5 pages (approximately 2,000 words) for consideration in the study. For more information on how to prepare a submission, please consult the Guide for Submitting Briefs to House of Commons Committees.

The deadline for the Committee to receive written briefs from the public is Friday, April 9, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. (ET). Briefs may be submitted electronically to the Committee Clerk at HUMA@parl.gc.ca or submitted online through the Committee’s study page of its website.

Canadians are welcome to follow the Committee on its website, where additional information is provided on its meetings, including past testimony; its ongoing work; and its membership.
