HOUSE INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITTEE RELEASES REPORT ON CANADA–U.K. TRADE

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade presented, in the House of Commons, its report entitled Trade Between Canada and the United Kingdom: A Potential Transitional Trade Agreement and Beyond.

The report’s four recommendations are designed to enhance Canada–United Kingdom trade relations, including for the benefit of Canada’s small and medium-sized businesses, and to enable parliamentarians to improve their examination of the potential impacts on Canadians of any future bilateral trade agreement.

“As a Commonwealth country, Canada shares a long history of friendship and cooperation with the United Kingdom, including in matters of trade,” said the Honourable Judy A. Sgro, P.C., M.P., Chair of the committee. “The Canada–United Kingdom Trade Continuity Agreement, which entered into force on 1 April 2021, ensured continuity and stability for Canadian businesses. Going forward, the challenge will be to solidify Canada’s strong trading relationship with the United Kingdom through a subsequent trade agreement between the two countries.”

Ms. Sgro concluded: “The committee is hopeful that the information and recommendations contained in the report will assist the Government of Canada in improving and strengthening the Canada–United Kingdom trading relationship in order to maximize the benefits for all Canadians.”
