Canada's Ocean War Graves

Ottawa, May 28, 2018 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities presented to the House of Commons a report entitled “Canada’s Ocean War Graves.” The report includes six recommendations relating to, among other things, the need to develop standalone legislation to protect Canada’s ocean war graves.

“Based on the compelling testimony provided by witnesses, our Committee is convinced that action must be taken to ensure that the ocean war graves of Canada’s sailors are given the same recognition and protection as the land-based cemeteries of soldiers and airmen,” said the Honourable Judy Sgro, P.C., M.P., Chair of the Committee.

She concluded: “On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank all of the witnesses who shared their thoughts and expertise with us. In particular, I wish to commend Captain Bender for having championed this important cause with such dedication and determination over the course of the past five years.
