NEWS RELEASE

"SAVE THE DATE" FOR IRAN ACCOUNTABILITY WEEK

Ottawa, May 02, 2017 -

On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 and Thursday, May 11, 2017, the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development will hold hearings on the human rights situation in Iran in recognition of Iran Accountability Week. This is the 5th annual Iran Accountability Week for the Subcommittee.

The Subcommittee will dedicate two hearings to the study of the Iranian regime’s record of human rights abuses against its own people – including repression, torture and executions. One hearing will focus on the plight of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, including testimony from former Member of Parliament and advocate for the Baha’i Seven, Irwin Cotler. A second hearing will focus on the persecution of women and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex (LGBTI) communities.

The Subcommittee will also issue a Joint Statement following the hearings. Subcommittee members may also make statements in the House of Commons Chamber regarding the Iranian regime’s human rights record.
