International human rights champions to be recognized by Subcommittee on International Human Rights [of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development]

Ottawa, Ontario, Thursday, June 6, 2019 – (West Block) The Subcommittee will be holding a public meeting as part of its first-ever recognition of human rights champions. The Subcommittee unanimously agreed to honour Marguerite “Maggie” Barankitse, Teresita “Ging” Quintos Deles, and Sara Hossain for their commitment and dedication to protecting human rights.

Marguerite Barankitse, Founder of Maison Shalom, a shelter in Burundi, has provided access to healthcare, education, and cultural services to over 20,000 orphan children. Teresita Quintos Deles is the Chairperson of the International Center on Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov), a policy research and advocacy centre in the Philippines that supports democratic reform initiatives, and a key figure in the inclusive peace process leading to the 2014 peace agreement related to decades-long conflict in Mindanao province. Sara Hossain is a Bangladeshi lawyer and Honorary Executive Director of the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), working to make the Bangladeshi legal system accessible to marginalized groups and more responsive to their needs.
