EVIDENCE

[Recorded by Electronic Apparatus]

  (1530)

[Translation]

I see we have a quorum. We can therefore proceed with the election of the chair.

[English]

I must inform committee members that the clerk of the committee can only receive motions for the election of the chair. The clerk cannot receive other types of motions, cannot entertain points of order, nor participate in debate.
We can now proceed with the election of the chair. Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the chair must be a member of the official opposition.

[Translation]

I'm ready to receive motions for the chair.

[English]

    Thank you, Clerk.
I would put the name of Bob Zimmer into nomination, please.
Somebody nominate Peter Kent. It should be a race.
If I had a red Tory, I wouldn't know what was going on.

[Translation]

It has been moved by Peter Kent that Bob Zimmer be elected chair of the committee.

[English]

    Are there any further motions?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried and Mr. Bob Zimmer duly elected chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!
Thank you, Peter, for the nomination.
Before inviting Mr. Zimmer to take the chair, if the committee wishes, we could also proceed with the election of the second vice-chair which is vacant at the moment.
     Yes, please.
I'm not sure about your decision.
     We're one-tenth.
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2), the second vice-chair must be a member of an opposition party other than the official opposition.
I'm now ready to receive a motion for the second vice-chair.
    Mr. Erskine-Smith.
I would move that it be Nathan Cullen.
    Thank you.
    Almost Wayne Long.
It has been moved by Mr. Erskine-Smith that Mr. Cullen be elected second vice-chair of the committee.
Is it the pleasure of the committee to adopt the motion?
    (Motion agreed to)
The Clerk: I declare the motion carried, and Mr. Cullen duly elected the second vice-chair of the committee.
    Some hon. members: Hear, hear!

  (1535)

I have some thoughts I put together.

[Translation]

I'll now give the floor to Mr. Zimmer.

[English]

I have a few comments, folks.
I'm glad to be here and thanks for the nomination, Mr. Kent. I've chaired a lot of different groups and organizations and committees on the Hill and I look forward to chairing this committee as well.
With that, I will adjourn the meeting.
