Pursuant to Standing Order 32(5) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, May 19, 2016, the Committee commenced consideration of the Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development - Spring 2016, referred to the Committee on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

Julie Gelfand, Marc Fortin, Lori MacDonald and Hilary Geller made statements and, with Bogdan Makuc and Kimberley Leach, answered questions.

On motion of Mark Gerretsen, it was agreed, — That the Committee invite the relevant departments to appear in one year’s time on the subject of the Spring 2016 Reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development to discuss the progress made based on the suggested recommendations in the reports.

At 12:44 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:45 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That the Committee study the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 on Thursday, June 16, 2016; inviting 2 witnesses to appear for the first hour and to have a discussion on the study’s work plan and focus for the second hour.

It was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $123,065.80 for the Committee’s travel to British Columbia, Alberta and Northwest Territories, during September 2016 be adopted and that the Chair present the said budget to the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets of the Liaison Committee.

It was agreed, — That, in relation to its study on protected areas and conservation objectives, the Committee be authorized to purchase up to $350.00 in gifts to be presented to hosts during its travel to British Columbia, Alberta and Northwest Territories in September 2016.

It was agreed, — That the Committee defray the hospitality expenses related to working meals to be held during its travel to British Columbia, Alberta and Northwest Territories in September 2016.

At 12:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
