A meeting of the Board of Internal Economy of the House of Commons was held on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 11:15 a.m., in Room 112-N, Centre Block.

In the Chair: The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons

Present: The Honourables Peter Van Loan and Gordon O'Connor; Mr. Nathan Cullen; Mrs. Nycole Turmel and Ms. Judy Foote

Secretary to the Board: Audrey O'Brien, Clerk of the House of Commons

Also Present: Mark Watters, Chief Financial Officer; Richard Denis, Deputy Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel; and Suzanne Verville, Secretariat

Tabling of Minutes

The minutes of the meeting of June 18, 2012 were approved for tabling .

Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the meeting of September 24, 2012 were adopted.

Administration

Fair Representation Act

Further to the visit last week by some members of the Board and MPs regarding the new seating arrangements to be installed in the Chamber to accommodate the new 30 MPs further to the adoption of the Fair Representation Act , the Board was briefed about the next steps with Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC).

First Quarter Financial Status Report and Supplementary Estimates (B) for Fiscal Year 2012-2013

The Board took note of the First Quarter Status Report for fiscal year 2012-2013 as of May 31, 2012. The Board also approved the Supplementary Estimates (B) for 2012-2013 in the amount of $1,586,000.

Legal Matters

The Board approved the payment of legal fees incurred for legal work in respect to the protection of the Member, which legal fees are to be reviewed by the Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel.

The Board requested further information regarding the payment of legal fees of a Member involved in a legal action in defamation.

Other Business

The Board took note of a letter sent by the Leaders of the Government in the Senate and the House of Commons.
