HOUSE COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES RELEASES REPORT ON TRANSPORTATION SAFETY
Ottawa, March 12, 2015 -
Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities (TRAN) presented its fourth report entitled Review of the Canadian Transportation Safety Regime: Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Safety Management Systems. The report contains ten (10) recommendations that pertain to Transport Canada’s rail safety oversight and enforcement activities, tank car standards for the transport of flammable liquids by rail, the liability and compensation regime for railways, the use of on-board voice and video recorders in locomotives, the liability limit on the Ship-source Oil Pollution Fund, maritime emergency response plans, and safety technology for heavy duty trucks.
The Committee’s study of transportation safety in Canada was initiated at the request of the Minister of Transport in November 2013. The purpose of this study was to review and report on the Canadian safety regime for transportation; specifically, the transportation of dangerous goods and the role of safety management systems. As requested by the Minister, the Committee tabled an interim report focussed on rail safety in June 2014.
During the course of the study, the Committee met with 45 organizations and 4 individuals.
The report is available online on the Committee’s website.
