The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 8:43 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Michael D. Chong, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Joyce Bateman, Corneliu Chisu, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Joe Daniel, Yvon Godin, Jacques Gourde, Manon Perreault, Lise St-Denis and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Denis Blanchette for Jamie Nicholls.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lucie Lecomte, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

 

Witnesses: Department of Canadian Heritage: Hubert Lussier, Assistant Deputy Minister, Citizenship and Heritage; Jean-Pierre C. Gauthier, Director, Film and Video Policy and Programs.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Yvon Godin gave notice of the following motions:

That the Committee invite the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to appear and provide an update on the government’s plans regarding the announced closure of the library at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute.

That the Committee invite the President of the Treasury Board to appear and discuss his Annual Report on Official Languages for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.

That the Committee invite the Minister of Justice to appear before the end of May 2014 to discuss access to justice in both official languages during a one-hour televised hearing.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(f) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, the Committee commenced its study of the Canadian Heritage Official Languages Annual Report 2011-12 and the 2012-2013 Annual Report of the Commissioner of Official Languages.
 

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 9:45 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Manon Perreault moved, — That the Members of the Committee travel to Yukon as a part of the study of the economic situation of the minority official-language communities.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 6.

 

On motion of John Williamson, it was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $ 27,600.00, for the study of The Economic Situation of Canada's Minority Linguistic Communities, be adopted.

 

At 10:07 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
