The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 306, The Valour Building, the Chair, Ben Lobb, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Cathy McLeod, Christine Moore, Murray Rankin, Lawrence Toet and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Isabelle Morin for Matthew Kellway and Lise St-Denis for Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

Associate Members present: Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health: Bonnie Schroeder, Director. Canadian Psychological Association: Karen R. Cohen, Chief Executive Officer. As individuals: Marnin Heisel, Research Director and Associate Professor, Department of Phychiatry, University of Western Ontario; R. Nicholas Carleton, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Regina. Fondation Martin-Bradley: Ghislain Beaulieu, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, April 30, 2015, the Committee resumed its study of Mental Health in Canada.
 

Marnin Heisel, by videoconference from London, Ontario, Bonnie Schroeder and Karen R. Cohen made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Ghislain Beaulieu, by teleconference from Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, and Nicholas Carleton, by videoconference from Regina, Saskatchewan, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 5:10 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:11 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $10,500.00, for the study of Mental Health in Canada be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study of no more than two meetings on lung cancer in Canada and that this study focus on elements within the federal jurisdiction that relate to the following areas:

a. the level of awareness of the main causes of lung cancer beyond smoking, including radon gas exposure;

b. the fundraising challenges faced by the lung cancer community and researchers, due to stigma associated with it being perceived as a “smoker’s disease”;

c. the latest research about causes of lung cancer for men and women; and

d. emerging best practices for the screening and detection of lung cancer.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee next meet on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, to consider a draft report on Safety Code 6.

 

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
