House of Commons Finance Committee Tables Report on Terrorist Financing in Canada and Abroad
Ottawa, June 18, 2015 -
Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance released a report entitled Terrorist Financing in Canada and Abroad: Needed Federal Actions.
“During this study, the Committee received comprehensive testimony about terrorists’ and terrorist organizations’ sources of revenue and the methods they use to transfer funds. The Committee also heard a variety of views on investigating and detecting terrorist financing, and concerning prosecuting those who commit terrorist financing offences,” said James Rajotte, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Leduc and Chair of the Committee. “Certainly, the witnesses’ testimony and submissions were instrumental in informing our thoughts and recommendations on the important topic of terrorist financing.”
The report contains 15 recommendations that are designed to increase the effectiveness of Canada’s anti–money laundering (AML) and anti–terrorist financing regime, as well as to contribute to global efforts to combat terrorist financing.
The Committee met with 30 organizations and individuals in spring 2015 for the purpose of this study, and received an additional 10 written submissions. The testimony and written submissions are available on the Committee’s website.
