The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, David Anderson, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Nina Grewal, Hélène Laverdière, Romeo Saganash and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

Acting Members present: Sean Casey for Marc Garneau.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Red Cross: Hossam Elsharkawi, Director, Emergencies and Recovery, International Operations; Conrad Sauvé, Chief Executive Officer; Robert M. Young, Senior Delegate, International Committee of the Red Cross. CARE Canada: Jessie Thomson, Director, Humanitarian Assistance and Emergency Team. International Republican Institute: Mark Green, President. As an individual: Bessma Momani, Associate Professor, Balsillie School of International Affairs, University of Waterloo.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of the situation in Syria.
 

Conrad Sauvé and Jessie Thomson each made a statement and, with Hossam Elsharkawi and Robert M. Young, answered questions.

 

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mark Green and Bessma Momani each made a statement and answered questions.

 

Paul Dewar moved, — That the Committee invite the Honourable John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to appear before the Committee regarding the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2013-2014 before March 6, 2014 and that this meeting be televised.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 5:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
