The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:28 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Komarnicki, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet, Brad Butt, Chris Charlton, Ryan Cleary, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Ed Komarnicki, Kellie Leitch, Colin Mayes, Phil McColeman and Devinder Shory.

Acting Members present: Tarik Brahmi for François Lapointe, Scott Simms for Rodger Cuzner and Chris Warkentin for Kellie Leitch.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst ; André Léonard, Analyst . House of Commons: Mariane Beaudin, Procedural Clerk.

Witnesses: Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and Chief Executive Officer. Canadian Federation of Independent Business: Daniel Kelly, Senior Vice-President, Legislative Affairs. Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council: Mervin Wiseman, Chair; Portia MacDonald-Dewhirst, Executive Director. Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters: John Sutcliffe, Executive Director. Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters: Mathew Wilson, Vice-President, National Policy.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee resumed its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”.

Mervin Wiseman, Portia MacDonald-Dewhirst and John Sutcliffe made statements and answered questions.

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Daniel Kelly, Mathew Wilson and Hon. Perrin Beatty made statements and answered questions.

At 5:29 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:32 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted Wednesday, May 9, 2012, the Committee examine the Main Estimates, and invite the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development to appear on the Main Estimates along with departmental officials during the scheduled meeting of Wednesday, May 30, 2012 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

At 5:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
