The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Ed Komarnicki, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Brad Butt, Jean Crowder, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Carol Hughes, Ed Komarnicki, Kellie Leitch, Colin Mayes, Phil McColeman, Manon Perreault and Devinder Shory.

 

Acting Members present: Marc-André Morin for Claude Patry.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Gruescu, Analyst; André Léonard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Industry: Alain Beaudoin, Director General, Information and Communications Technologies Branch; Shane Williamson, Director General, Program Coordination Branch, Science and Innovation Sector. BioTalent Canada: Robert Henderson, Executive Director. Environmental Careers Organization of Canada: Grant Trump, President and Chief Executive Officer.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee, in consultation with the Chair, prepare a draft budget respecting the Committee's proposed travel to St. John's, Newfounland; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Halifax, Nova Scotia and Montreal, Quebec, in relation to its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”, for consideration by the Committee on Wednesday, March 28, 2012.

 

It was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Committee, in consultation with the Chair, prepare a draft budget respecting the Committee's proposed travel to Vancouver, British Columbia; Whitehorse, Yukon; Calgary, Alberta; Fort McMurray, Alberta and Estevan, Saskatchewan, in relation to its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”, for consideration by the Committee on Wednesday, March 28, 2012.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, the Committee resumed its studies of “Fixing the Skills Gap: Addressing Existing Labour Shortages in High Demand Occupations” and “Understanding Labour Shortages: Addressing Barriers to Filling Low-Skilled Jobs”.
 
 

Robert Henderson and Grant Trump made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Alain Beaudoin made a statement and, with Shane Williamson, answered questions.

 

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
