The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Matthew Kellway, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and David Wilks.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Martha Butler, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Public Health Association of BC: Marjorie MacDonald, President. Canadian Doctors for Medicare: Danyaal Raza, Board Member.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 9, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of technological innovation.
 

Marjorie MacDonald and Danyaal Raza made statements and answered questions.

 

Libby Davies moved, — That the questioning of witnesses resume even though the order of the day indicates that the Committee should proceed to Committee business.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division: YEAS: Libby Davies, Hedy Fry, Matthew Kellway, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah — 5; NAYS: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, David Wilks — 6.

 

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health and Senior Officials from Health Canada, to appear as soon as possible before the Committee on the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2012-2013 for a period of two hours.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health and Senior Officials from Health Canada, to appear before the Committee on the Main Estimates 2013-2014 between now and May 31, 2014 for a period of two hours.

 

At 4:51 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:54 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee extend the study of technological innovation, including best practices, in health care in Canada, to include more testimony on the following themes: the costs of adopting new technologies into the health care system; how innovative new technology supports prevention of chronic diseases; technological innovation and the treatment of rare diseases; and commercialisation and venture capital.

 

At 5:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
