The Standing Committee on Health met at 8:44 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Parm Gill, Wladyslaw Lizon, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Safe Kids Canada: Pamela Fuselli, Executive Director. Consumer Health Products Canada: David Skinner, President; Gerry Harrington, Director, Public Affairs. University of British Columbia: Paul Kershaw, Professor, Human Early Learning Partnership. ThinkFirst Canada: Rebecca Nesdale-Tucker, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, October 3, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of health promotion and disease prevention.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

Anne Minh-Thu Quach moved, — That the Committee undertake as soon as possible a study of the federal government’s role in sustaining health care funding after recently announced changes to the Canada Health Transfer; that this study look at the importance of federal collaboration with the provinces and territories in exploring measures of accountability in health care practices across the country; that it hold at least five (5) meetings on this study to hear witnesses, including the Minister of Health; and that it report its findings to the House of Commons.

 

Colin Carrie moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 5.

 

At 9:52 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:53 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 10:05 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:06 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Questioning of the witnesses resumed.

 

At 10:22 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:24 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, on Tuesday, February 14, 2012, the Committee study Bill C-313, An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (non-corrective cosmetic contact lenses).

 

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
