The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Dany Morin, Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith, Mark Strahl and John Williamson.

Acting Members present: Shelly Glover for Mark Strahl and Greg Kerr for Parm Gill.

In attendance: House of Commons: Isabelle Dumas, Procedural Clerk . Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris, Analyst ; Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst.

Appearing: Hon. Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health.

Witnesses: Department of Health: Glenda Yeates, Deputy Minister; Jamie Tibbetts, Chief Financial Officer. Public Health Agency of Canada: David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer; James Libbey, Chief Financial Officer. Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Alain Beaudet, President; James Roberge, Chief Financial Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, the Committee commenced consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2011-12: Votes 1b, 5b, 10b, 20b, 25b, 40b, 45b and 50b under HEALTH, referred to the Committee on Thursday, November 3, 2011.

The Chair called Vote 1b under HEALTH.

The Minister made a statement and, with Alain Beaudet, answered questions.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The witnesses answered questions.
