The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met by videoconference at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room C-120, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, Rodney Weston, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Ryan Cleary, Patricia Davidson, Fin Donnelly, Randy Kamp, Ryan Leef, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Robert Sopuck, Jonathan Tremblay and Rodney Weston.

 

Acting Members present: Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe for Rosane Doré Lefebvre and Blaine Calkins for Bryan Hayes.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kristen E. Courtney, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an individual: Colin Brauner, Professor, Department of Zoology, University of British Columbia. Living Oceans Society: Catherine Stewart, Campaign Manager, Salmon Farming.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, the Committee resumed its study of closed containment salmon aquaculture.
 

Colin Brauner, by videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia, made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:18 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:33 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Patricia Davidson gave the following notice: “That the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans conduct a study on invasive species that pose a threat to the Great Lakes system, in order to better understand the overall management of the Great Lakes fisheries, with emphasis on: Asian Carp and the potential impact on commercial and sport fishing industries across the Great Lakes; To review current and future strategies to deal with the on-going risk from Asian Carp and other invasive species like the Northern Snakehead fish and Lamprey Eel; An overview of the dispute resolution mechanisms in place for bilateral issues related to invasive species risk management practices for the Great Lakes system (Canada/US.)”

 

Catherine Stewart, by videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia, made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:22 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
