NEWS RELEASE

PRE-BUDGET CONSULTATIONS 2011 BRIEFS PUBLISHED ON THE COMMITTEE'S WEB SITE

Ottawa, September 28, 2011 -

Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance is pleased to announce that, for the first time in the history of the Committee’s pre-budget consultation process, the text of all briefs submitted to the Committee as part of this process will be published on the Committee’s web site.

“This measure will enhance the transparency and openness of the pre-budget consultation process,” said Mr. James Rajotte, M.P., Chair of the House Finance Committee. “Certainly, the Committee tries to hear from as many Canadians as possible during the process, both in Ottawa and across Canada, there are a great many budget-related ideas presented by Canadians that do not make their way into the public record because there is no public meeting with the Committee. Publishing all briefs on the Committee’s web site allows all interested Canadians to read about the important and innovative thoughts submitted to us regarding federal budget priorities.”

To date, more than 400 briefs from organizations and individuals throughout Canada have been submitted to the Committee. On the Committee’s website, the briefs are organized alphabetically by the name of the organization or individual submitting the brief. A text version of each brief, in both French and English, can be downloaded. Briefs that exceeded the 5-page limit specified by the Committee in the June 2011 press release may not be available in their entirety on the web site.

The 2011 consultations will result in a report to be tabled in the House of Commons in December 2011. The suggestions by Canadians as well as the recommendations by the Committee will be considered by the Minister of Finance in the development of the 2012 federal budget.
