The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in a televised session at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Marie-Claude Morin, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, Joyce Bateman, Sana Hassainia, Marie-Claude Morin, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Hon. Judy Sgro, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Sylvain Chicoine for Anne-Marie Day, Shelly Glover for Wai Young, Brent Rathgeber for Joan Crockatt, Djaouida Sellah for Niki Ashton and Bev Shipley for Roxanne James.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Union of Canadian Correctional Officers: Anne-Marie Beauchemin, Correctional Officer; Francine Boudreau, Correctional Officer. Union of Solicitor General Employees: Robin Kers, Labour Relations Officer, National Office.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of sexual harassment in the federal workplace.
 

Anne-Marie Beauchemin and Francine Boudreau answered questions.

 

At 11:52 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:56 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Robin Kers answered questions.

 

Niki Ashton gave notice of the following motion:

Whereas the numbers of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada continues to rise;

Whereas there are serious allegations of ongoing failures to protect Aboriginal women and girls from violence and violent behaviour including reference to incidents by police officers against Aboriginal women in Northern British Columbia;

Whereas it is the mandate of the Committee to guide Status of Women Canada, which has the ability to direct other government agencies and departments;

Be it resolved that, given the legal mandate of Status of Women Canada “to support action…that will lead to equality across Canada”, the Committee call on the Government to launch a national public inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada, including examining possible police misconduct against Aboriginal women.

 

At 12:40 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:43 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted on Thursday, February 7, 2013, the Committee hear the testimony of more than two representatives from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in relation to the study of sexual harassment in the federal workplace.

 

At 12:53 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
