The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Lois Brown, Bob Dechert, Paul Dewar, Nina Grewal, Hélène Laverdière, Ève Péclet, Hon. Bob Rae, Romeo Saganash and John Williamson.

 

Acting Members present: Richard M. Harris for Dave Van Kesteren, Wladyslaw Lizon for Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Mark Warawa for Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

Associate Members present: Hon. Mark Eyking.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Retail Council of Canada: Diane J. Brisebois, President and Chief Executive Officer. Loblaw Companies Limited: Bob Chant, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Communication. Shareholder Association for Research and Education: Peter Chapman, Executive Director. Gildan Activewear Inc.: Peter Iliopoulos, Senior Vice-President, Public and Corporate Affairs, Head Office. As an individual: Chris MacDonald, Director, Jim Pattison Ethical Leadership Education and Research Program, Ted Rogers School of Management.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, May 9, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of Corporate Practices by Companies Supplying and Manufacturing Products in Developing Countries for Canadian Consumers.
 

Peter Chapman, by videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia, Diane J. Brisebois, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, and Peter Iliopoulos each made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:05 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Chris MacDonald and Bob Chant each made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
