The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 12:07 p.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen Street, the Chair, Merv Tweed, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Malcolm Allen, Alex Atamanenko, Ruth Ellen Brosseau, Pierre Lemieux, Francine Raynault, Blake Richards, Merv Tweed, Frank Valeriote and Bob Zimmer.

Acting Members present: Paul Calandra for Randy Hoback, Colin Carrie for LaVar Payne, Rob Clarke for Brian Storseth and Royal Galipeau for Pierre Lemieux.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst ; Khamla Heminthavong, Analyst.

Witnesses: As an individual: Tina Widowski, Professor, Department of Animal and Poultry Science and Egg Farmers of Canada Research Chair in Poultry Welfare, University of Guelph. Chicken Farmers of Canada: Mike Dungate, Executive Director; Steve Leech, National Program Manager, Food Safety and Animal Welfare. Retail Council of Canada: David Wilkes, Senior Vice-President, Grocery Division and Government Relations; Heather Mak, Manager, Sustainability.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, January 31, 2013, the Committee resumed its study of agricultural and agri-food products supply chain (Animal Welfare).

Mike Dungate, Tina Widowski and David Wilkes made statements and, with Steve Leech, answered questions.

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
