Independent Review Confirms Quality of the Office of the Auditor General's Work

Ottawa, November 24, 2010 -

By requesting an independent peer review of her office’s audit practice, the Auditor General has demonstrated a clear commitment to accountability and to continuous improvement, according to a report of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts presented to the House of Commons today.

In response to a common question is “Who audits the Auditor?” the Auditor General, Sheila Fraser, requested several external reviews of her office’s audit practice. The latest review, an international “peer” review, was led by the Australian National Audit Office, and completed in June 2010.

The review found that the Office of the Auditor General’s (OAG) quality management system was suitably designed, but there were implementation issues for annual financial audits in relation to the completeness of the risk assessment procedures and the sufficiency of audit documentation. The review made several recommendations and suggestions for improvement, and the OAG developed an action plan to implement them.

The Committee commends the Auditor General for being a leader in requesting external reviews, and appreciates the Auditor General’s commitment to accountability and transparency.

In its report, the Committee recommended that the OAG develop a schedule for regular peer reviews and work with other national audit offices to share best practices for performance audits.
